Books. They are the epitome of what goes through the human mind placed between two covers. Many dictionaries would define the term “book” as a ‘literary work bound with glue between two covers.’ Often times though, these covers do not do the story within much justice. There are more to books than simply black words printed on white pages. Let us consider how.
Whether one is a self-proclaimed “reader” or not avid reader, at some point in their life they have read something that has latched onto the reigns of their attention. Nothing compares to being drawn into a good story. It is as if you place yourself in the very shoes of the characters and experience all of the triumphs and trials that they are facing. Books are designed to draw us in, and once every aspect of our very being is essentially involved in a story, we feel obligated to find out what will happen to our favorite character(s), and how the rest of the story will unfold.
Books affect our innermost thoughts and emotions. This is why many find it a challenge to get through a horror story without peering over their shoulder every five minutes or some can not read a romance novel without shedding a bucket load of tears. The effects that books can have on a person give evidence of the importance that they can play in our lives. Without famous novels such as J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, we would not have an appreciation for the way the world once was and how far we have come.
The power of books should never be underestimated. They contain deeper meanings that people often do not take the time to examine and develop an appreciation for. If people took the time to read books on a regular basis, than they would genuinely experience the joy found within the pages of that novel. Yes, books are a hard copy of the thoughts and emotions running through an authors mind that are laid out on pages for our enjoyment and at times, benefit.
