I am astounded at the human race by many things. Our ability to rise to the top of the food chain, to invent so many different inventions, and to conquer land, sea, air, and move onto space. But I am also baffled by the human condition to fear almost everything different. Take for example any hate group, white supremacists, Nazis, etc. they hate an entire group of other people just because they are different and do not match their ideals, or looks. To me this is a hate group of adults who are immature and seriously disturbed. They say “you aren’t human because you’re not like me, so I’m going to kill you”. When it comes down to it, it really is a mixture of immaturity for the world not accommodating their every need, and one issue or another that drives them to hate, or even murder.
I know that the first things people see when they meet people are visual things like skin tone, gender, hairstyle, clothing, and so on, because when you first meet a person your first impression is based on what they look like. I judge people mostly on how they act. If they are nice, then I like them, if they are jerks, then I do not. That was Martin Luther King Jr.’s philosophy after all, “not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”. I have accepted the fact that you cannot force your views upon someone else, but rather understand each other’s opinion through reasoning and logic. In arguments, even though I do not agree with another person’s opinion, I try to see their side of the argument.
I also recognize women as equals. In other countries, such as those in the Middle East, they do not. It is sad that women in these other countries cannot fulfill their potential because of the restrictions of their society. I also find sexism to be utterly stupid. Not to sound conceited, but I am quite intelligent and I am in honors, however if you ask me a question about poetry I am more clueless than the three blind mice. However i have a female friend who can write just about every kind of poem there is. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. My aforementioned friend can also name almost every type of poem there is off of the top of her head! Not to mention how she is striving to be valedictorian.
Speaking of school, I should mention how MCVTS was probably the best choice I had for a high school. Because there is no set “chain of popularity” the students can basically be themselves. I am close friends with one person in architecture, and another in theater. We have our own separate goals and professions but we are still friends. That’s just what this world needs. More places where people can just be themselves.
I am not naïve. I know that the world is not all about happy endings where the bad guys become your friends and everyone has pizza. I also know that wars, even today, are fought because people are different. When it all comes down to it, we are all human beings, and that is one thing that we all have in common.
