When she jumped, I stepped away.
Before, I had promised, "I'll be there for you."
Lies, I thought.
Before, I had said, "I'll hold your hand if you need me to."
I can't, I thought.
I had told her, "You won't be alone."
But I will be, she thought.
When she jumped, I stepped away.
Even though I had promised I'd go with her.
