The Dragon vs. The Wolf

Death of a mother and a son too
Both monsters born from grime and goo
And a question always they wondered with whom
Mated with Grendel's mom and chose to make him look like poo
With the Death of an old King Beowulf would rise
For a total of 50 years with no compromise
But little did he know it would soon meet his own demise
For one day a slave got loose
And somehow untightened the grip on his noose
He climbed up the mountains way up high, and saw a dark cave with no leery eyes
He went in and saw treasures of gold and jewels
Too bad the one he chose would make everyone doomed
He saw and took a shiny gold cup
Then awakened the dragon that stayed locked up
The dragon was mad that his treasure got stole
By a peon of a man who had stolen with a darkened soul
Upon the next day, fire rained down
And the people called up to the one with the crown
"King Beowulf, King Beowulf, hear our plea
Rise up and slay thee."
The evil dragon with no justice, no heart
It appeared and struck fear in not just our souls but our hearts
So Beowulf went with his followers to fight the mighty beast
When seen only Beowulf and Wiglaf were left standing on their feet
The battle was hard with almost Beowulf's loss
Until Wiglaf got a chance to strike at the beast's heart
And with the last of his strength Beowulf struck the final blow
But shortly after sending him to death row
It seemed the Dragon's poison could not be beat
Not even by a man of Beowulf's feats.

If you asked me who I am, I’d probably forget to tell you
my name.

Instead I’d tell you that my eyes are brown, and my hair is
brown, and inside I'm brown like dirt.
That I'm shorter than my mother, but
taller than some people in the world; and that I do indeed get mistaken for an
8th grader sometimes.
I'd tell you that I like walking better than
driving because feeling the ground under my feet is an affirmation that I am
alive and that I am connecting to something bigger than me.
I'd tell
you that I think the sky looks too big at night and not big enough in the
morning.
I'd probably explain that it has something to do with the fact
that I wake up with every intention of flying and go to sleep knowing my
elbows haven't sprouted wings yet.

But don't worry, I’d say, because
I’ll wake up hopeful again tomorrow.

And if you were to wait around a
little more, I might be persuaded to tell you I’d lost my mind seven years ago
and would you be kind enough to help me look for it?
I'd probably tell you
about the girls with teardrop-eyes who chewed up my heart because they
thought it'd be aspirin and was indignant when it burned a hole
through their livers.
I'd probably shrug and tell you my lips must be
acidic because I never can kiss the same mouth twice.

This is probably about the time I’d laugh and tell you that I’m silly because I run
away when I see what I most want.
I'd tell you that I’d rather
spend my days messing up the puzzle pieces than enjoying the way they fit
together. I'd say that most people think they're crazy but I know I
actually am because I can't take a good thing and keep it that way.
I have a talent for pushing people away and lighting fires under bare feet.

But I’d shrug and smile because I really can't blame the
people that run, and I blame myself instead for chasing them down the sun stroked streets.

And this is probably when you'd pat my shoulder and
tell me I’m not so bad.
Here, I’d probably say I know, because to be
honest, I think I love myself too.
But I wouldn't be honest because
everything I said has been a lie.
You wouldn't know that.
Because who I
am, is everything I don't want to tell you.
So sometimes, no every
time I have to look in the mirror and remind myself that I screwed up
again, I think to myself:
Days like this make me wish I was a smoker.
Because this tar I feel trapped inside, I'd rather be ingesting.

But then I remind myself about the cancer
and black lungs and yellow teeth and I’d laugh because I wasn't serious.

But if I was serious, I’d probably tell you that I feel bad for the people
who ever have the bad luck to fall in love with me.
I'd purse my lips and
think and tell you that they're going to have to have a taste for
uncontrollable frustration because I could promise them that.
And it's a shame, I’d say, because every morning they're going to have to pick up
the same pieces off the ground that they glued back together the night before.

But its okay, I’d say, because for now, I really am worth it.

And don't worry. I'd notice the way you're checking your watch and
I’d stretch and say the weather's beautiful and isn't it a shame that I have to leave?
I'd give you a hug and say what a pleasure it'd been to meet
you and remind you to watch your tongue because you'll trip more often with that than your feet.
I'd pick up my purse and walk off thinking I’d look better
if I was wearing a Grace
Kelly inspired hat.
And I’d have forgotten you by the
time I turned the corner.

That's about the time you'd
remember I forgot to tell you my name.

But you didn't really need
it to know who I am, did you?

Human Kindness

Many injustices he has suffered.
When will my sorrow end the tiny man asks.
Day and night.
Hour to hour
He ponders.
Then a good friend comes along
And lifts his soul up
Joyous they are
Just as the grass springs up in the springtime
They likewise beam with such energy.
It just takes a smile
A nice friend
A holding hand
To rejuvenate dimmed hopes.
To make a human open their eyes,
And see where their compass guides them.
A giant the tiny man has become,
Insurmountable sadness he has overcome.
Now he stands tall,
And returns good for good to all.

You cry for my help and fall into the floor like quicksand
That hardens to concrete and you can’t move
And freeze in your place
Your world once so small so small
Is now so large around you
But it’s too late your feet are stuck
Stuck in the ground and now you
Cannot move
All the bad rushes back
Flashing in front of you me
Biting like fierce piranhas
Grasping my skin
Your legs are weak held up
By only your backbone
Yet you will to fall
To fall and not return
I wonder how you stand
The times you are beaten and battered most
Crumble to your needs because your wants
Are nothing
Now the time and your time are the same
Standing and moving through my mind
But as your body stays
Unmoving
You tug at the will to fall
Move
Anything
But your body stays
Unmoving
The walls are closing in
The air suffocating me making me gasp
Finding refuge in the neutral space
Contemplating the decisions you’ve made
Eyes sparkling with outlines of tears
Hold on
Decisions you can’t change
Open your eyes and see the miracles around you

High School Days

When you first start high school,
you’re nervous, naturally, but as you go on, you begin
to get the hang of it. As
you progress, and go through the years, you feel comfortable, as
though the school is a second home because it is all you’ve known for the past four years
of your life.
You become an “expert” on everything in
the school, which bathrooms are cleanest,
which water fountains are coldest, not
to eat the school lunch. You think you’ve got
yourself set and good to go.
Suddenly it hits you that you won’t be there for very much
longer. You’ve got a
few months left and then you’re done for good. You’ve got huge
choices to make
as the world lies dead ahead.

Buried Treasure

Walk, walk, walk, walk
Along the shoreline.
Down, down, down,
Down I dig into the sand.

I have lost a treasure,
And I am trying to find where it was tossed.

Under the sand? In the watery deep?
Where could this treasure be?

There is no finding it,
Because this treasure has gone into a place
Of no return or reclaim.

This lost treasure is just like hope.
It can be tossed aside and never found by its owner.

A stranger will stumble across it
Then take it as a gift--
A gift that was used to make
A person believe
Again.
